A group of young people sunbathe by a river and dive into it, and nobody notices that Gabi has drowned. After the death, those left have to look at their own consciences: who is responsible, and where they stand towards one another and towards the world. The pressure makes adults of them quickly and changes what they are to each other. It was István Gaál’s first feature, shot by Sándor Sára, who builds a way of looking that alternates landscape with the human face. It opened on 2 April 1964 and became one of the first international successes of the Hungarian New Wave. It was put on the Budapest Twelve list in 1968, and the following year a poll of critics and directors counted it among the twelve best Hungarian films made since 1948.
