Dance Me Outside

Bruce McDonald adapted this from W. P. Kinsella's story collection and set it on a fictional First Nations reserve in Northern Ontario. Silas Crow has to write a personal essay to get a job he wants, and the story he tells is the killing of a young woman from the reserve by a man from outside it. When that man draws a light two year sentence for manslaughter, the community is left both stunned and furious, and what the film is really about is what people do after an injustice like that. Its tone refuses to settle, running grief and comedy side by side. The young roles played by Adam Beach and Ryan Black later fed into a television series.
