What Dances with Dragon Is About
In Wong Jing’s 1991 Hong Kong comedy, Andy Lau plays a rich businessman washed up on a rural island after a diving accident. Taken for an illegal immigrant, he ends up hiding in a small family grocery and tells nobody who he is, rather enjoying the drop from wealth to nothing. He falls for the shopkeeper’s daughter, who is dreaming of exactly the escape from poverty he is currently on holiday from, which is the film’s one genuinely sharp idea. Meanwhile a plan is under way back at his company to remove him. Sharla Cheung and Deanie Ip are in support; it opened at the end of 1991 and took more than twenty million Hong Kong dollars.
