Dangerous Love Affairs

Juliette and Valmont are a married couple, known in society, with an arrangement between them. Both take other lovers and then tell each other about it. There is one rule: no falling in love. Juliette points her husband at a new target as he leaves for a ski resort. But Valmont genuinely falls for Marianne, whom he meets there. The moment the rule breaks, the game between the two of them turns into a settling of scores, and the people around them pay for it. Roger Vadim directs, adapting Choderlos de Laclos's novel of 1782 and moving it out of its own century into his, the Paris of the late fifties. Jeanne Moreau plays Juliette and Gérard Philipe plays Valmont. The music is by Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey. A hundred and six minutes.
