Darkon

The documentary follows a wargaming club called Darkon in Baltimore: people who play live, building their own kingdoms, wars and alliances. Its interest is not in the costumes but in the lives outside the game. People who spend the week in ordinary jobs spend the weekend constructing a position history never offered them, and inside it they genuinely become something. Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel began filming in 2003. It won the documentary audience award at South by Southwest in 2006 and was noted above all for refusing to be snide about its subjects. The camera films them armoured and in ordinary clothes with the same seriousness, and that is the decision the film rests on.
