What Dean Martin: King of Cool Is About
The documentary follows Dean Martin’s career from the screen to television and on to the stages of Las Vegas. His easy manner, the look of a man who cares about nothing, worked in every one of those places, and the film asks what was behind it. His complicated relations with Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr are each taken up in turn. People who grew up watching him also speak, trying to say why he is still wondered about today. The account stands somewhere between a piece of admiration and an explanation; how much of the drunk act on stage was a performance is left as an open question. Tom Donahue’s hundred minute American documentary was completed in 2021.
