Debtocracy

This documentary looks for the causes of the Greek debt crisis and proposes a way out that official circles were not raising: auditing the debt and treating part of it as illegitimate. The experience of countries such as Ecuador, which set up debt audit commissions, is examined as an example. Directed together by Katerina Kitidi and Aris Chatzistefanou, the film came out in 2011 at the worst point of the crisis and was released free under a Creative Commons licence; it was subtitled into many languages within a short time. David Harvey and Samir Amin are among those speaking in it. Its political position is openly on the left, and it does not give the case for austerity equal room. It is best watched as a film making an argument.
