Die Tomorrow

The film is built from short sections describing the hours just before a death. A group of students take a graduation photograph, two friends talk in a room, a man argues on the phone, someone wakes up. At the end of each section we are told that this person will die the next day. Death is never shown in any of them; the narrative always stays before it. Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit writes and directs. Other material is cut between the sections: statistics on accidents and deaths taken from news reports, and real people talking to camera. Among those talking are a woman of a hundred and a small child who does not know what death is. The running time is short, about seventy five minutes, and the sections are deliberately without event. The idea is ordinariness: the last day before a death carries nothing that marks it out. Nawapol is a known figure in independent Thai cinema and his earlier work made formal experiments about the internet, data and daily life. The production is low budget and most scenes are taken in a single shot with a fixed camera. Who it is for: viewers who like conceptual and experimental film and Asian independent cinema. Who it is not for: there is no plot, the sections do not connect, and the repetition of the idea becomes tiring after a point.
