What BNK48: Girls Don't Cry Is About
The documentary is about a Thai girl pop group formed on the model of one in Japan. Ordinary teenagers are offered the chance to be selected, but those chosen enter a controlled order built on constant competition. The film puts at its centre not what goes on backstage but interviews one by one; the girls speak in their own words to the camera. The account neither promotes the group nor directly accuses the industry; what ranking, elimination and the race for visibility do to a person is drawn out of their own telling. Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit’s hundred and seven minute Thai documentary was completed in 2018.
