Amar, a radio programmer, becomes fixated on a woman he sees at a railway station in the northeast and follows her. She does not talk, she disappears, and then she turns up in Delhi under an entirely different identity. What Amar does not understand is that she is in the city for an operation. Mani Ratnam uses the shape of a love story and installs separatist violence and the state's presence in the northeast inside it. Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala star. A. R. Rahman's score and the Chaiyya Chaiyya sequence shot on the roof of a train took on a life of their own. It did not perform in India but charted in Britain and has become one of Ratnam's most discussed works. The ending offers no reconciliation at all. Who it is for: viewers who like political narrative in Indian cinema and Rahman's music. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a romantic resolution.
