Director by Night

Anthony Giacchino's 2022 documentary covers the first attempt at directing by Michael Giacchino, known as a film composer. He makes a short horror production for a studio and the documentary stands behind that process. What is interesting is two brothers working together. The person directing the documentary is the composer's brother; that closeness makes the material unusually intimate while also removing critical distance. The narrative shows Giacchino's interest in classic horror cinema and how he builds it visually. The running time is short and the documentary openly serves a promotional function; the production is shown as free of difficulty. Who it's for: those interested in film music and behind-the-scenes documentaries. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical view; the documentary is studio-backed promotion.
