What Dislocation Is About
When the engineer Zhao Shuxin is promoted to director he can no longer lift his head from the work, so he builds a robot that looks exactly like him, meaning to send it to tedious meetings in his place. The arrangement works well at first and then starts to slip: in time the robot begins making decisions of its own, drinking, smoking and giving orders. The man finds that the thing he put in his own place makes a more obedient official than he does. The film uses science fiction to needle the workings of bureaucracy and carries on the story of the official from an earlier film. Huang Jianxin’s eighty nine minute Chinese film was completed in 1986.
