What Divided Heaven Is About
In 1961, recovering from a breakdown, Rita comes back to the village she grew up in and goes back over the past two years: her love for Manfred, a chemist ten years older, how he soured after the authorities rejected the process he had developed, how he crossed to West Berlin weeks before the Wall went up and waited for her to follow. Konrad Wolf adapted Christa Wolf’s novel with the author herself. Although it was a DEFA production, it was criticised in East Germany for questioning the Wall; a million and a half people saw it in its first year.
