Solo Sunny

Sunny sings for a band trying to make a place for itself in East Berlin. They play small towns week after week, and she cannot connect with the audience or with her own life. A relationship with Ralph, an amateur saxophonist who studied philosophy, goes nowhere either. After a fight with a bandmate and a few words too many to a compère, she is thrown out of the group and left on her own. Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase directed this 1980 DEFA film together, and it became something nobody expected in East Germany, selling out the Kino International for weeks on end. Renate Krößner, who plays Sunny, won the Silver Bear for best actress at Berlin. It was Wolf's last film.
