What Lissy Is About

The film is set in Berlin in the nineteen thirties. Lissy Schroeder is a working-class woman. She is married to a clerk called Alfred. In 1932 Alfred loses his job. Being out of work weighs heavily at home. Until then Alfred had taken no interest in politics. But he falls for Nazi propaganda. In the end he joins the Storm Troopers. Lissy’s brother Paul is inside the account as well. For a time Paul stood close to the communists. Then he too puts on the same uniform. But he is killed for the views he holds against them. Lissy begins to question everything after that. In the end she makes a dangerous decision. The film was adapted from a novel by Franz Carl Weiskopf. Sonja Sutter and Horst Drinda take the leads in Konrad Wolf’s East German film of 1957.
