What Goya: Or the Hard Way to Enlightenment Is About
As a painter at the court of King Carlos the Fourth, Goya has come into wealth and standing. He believes in the king and in the church, and he is at the same time a Spaniard who loves his people. The two loyalties do not hold together and the man is left inside a dilemma. The more he begins to paint what he sees, the further he drifts from the court, and the question of what art is for becomes the matter of his own life. The film is about a painter coming into political awareness and shows what it cost him. Donatas Banionis plays the lead in Konrad Wolf’s hundred and thirty six minute film, completed in 1971.
