Doctor

Varun is an army doctor. He is calm to the point of seeming without feeling; he shouts at nobody, nothing surprises him, and his fiancée breaks off the engagement because of it. While the families are gathered news comes: his fiancée's cousin has been taken. The girl is sixteen. The police move slowly. Varun takes it on himself. His method is odd; he proceeds calmly, makes plans, and unsettles the people across from him. The trail leads to a network trafficking organs and people. The man at the head of it does not understand what Varun is, and that is his mistake. Nelson Dilipkumar directs. Sivakarthikeyan plays Varun; Vinay Rai, Priyanka Arul Mohan and Yogi Babu are in the cast. The language is Tamil. The music is by Anirudh Ravichander and the score is one of the things that gives the film its character. The register is black comedy; the violence is given with comic music and the choice is deliberate. Sivakarthikeyan was known for comic parts; here he plays a character who does not react and the humour comes out of that. The matter it treats is trafficking in children; the film builds the subject seriously but tells it lightly. The narrative moves with a crowded cast and the secondary characters carry the comedy. The film did well at the Tamil box office and made the director's name. Its limit is tone; the distance between the heavy subject and the comedy is uncomfortable in some scenes. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil cinema and action with black humour. Who it is not for: the tone is contested, it is long, and the ending overblown.
