Don 2

Having taken over the Asian drug network, Don now looks at Europe. His plan is to take the currency printing plates held in the vault of a central bank in Berlin. To do it he first surrenders to the police in Malaysia, then breaks an old enemy out of prison and assembles his crew there. Roma, who has been trying to catch him for years, is still after him. The subject is not the heist but every move of Don's having been planned in advance. The film keeps the viewer behind; the reason for events is only explained afterwards, a structure inherited from the first film. The form is large in scale. Berlin streets, rooftop chases, helicopter sequences; it was among the most expensive productions Indian cinema had shot in Europe at the time. The action is openly in the mould of international spy films. It is the sequel to a remake: the first film was a new version of a 1978 classic, while this one is an entirely new story. It screened at the Berlin film festival and a three-dimensional version was also prepared. Shah Rukh Khan plays Don, Priyanka Chopra plays Roma and Boman Irani the old enemy. Farhan Akhtar directs, as he did the first film. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian action and the spy film template. Who it is not for: anyone looking for logic; the plot keeps explaining itself retrospectively and some connections do not hold.
