What Downey Wrote That Is About
Brent Hodge's 2025 documentary is about Jim Downey, for many years a writer on a late-night programme. He never appeared on screen, yet he largely built the show's comic language. The argument is that writers stay invisible. The sketches he wrote are taken up one by one; the narrative also argues about where political comedy changed and does not leave Downey's own position unquestioned. Fred Armisen and Dana Carvey speak. The archive is wide. The tone is light. Who it's for: those curious about television comedy and comedy writing. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the programme; most of the sketches need context.
