Dying to Divorce

The documentary takes up femicide and domestic violence in Turkey. By the film’s account more than one woman in three has lived through that violence. At the centre is the lawyer İpek Bozkurt. Bozkurt works to get violent men prosecuted. She does it alongside activists from the We Will Stop Femicides Platform. Two women’s cases are followed in the film. One is Arzu, married off at fourteen; when she asked for a divorce her husband shot her, and she lost both legs and the use of her arms. The other is Kübra, a television presenter. The filming ran over five years, and the political changes of that period enter the account as well. Chloe Fairweather’s documentary, eighty minutes long, was completed in 2021.
