What Enchanted Kingdom Is About
The documentary builds a journey through different regions of the natural world: forests, caves, seas, mountains and, at the end, a great animal migration. The commentary introduces every place as a kind of fairy tale realm and gives the animals as characters in it. The images are shot close up; the aim is less to inform than to leave the viewer with a sense of wonder. Neil Nightingale directed, and Idris Elba reads the narration. It is a nature documentary in the BBC Earth line, prepared for cinema. The usual problem of the form is here too: nature is made to resemble people, stories are written for animals, and the magical telling sometimes leaves the actual information behind. The photography is the strongest thing in it.
