What Enemies, a Love Story Is About
Herman Broder came through the war and lives in New York, ghostwriting books for a rabbi and telling nobody the truth about anything. He is married to Yadwiga, the Polish peasant woman who hid him in a hayloft during the war and whom he married out of gratitude. There is also Masha, the woman he is bound to. Then Tamara turns up: the first wife everyone believed dead. Herman builds lie upon lie among the three of them. What he is running from is not the women but the fact of having survived. Paul Mazursky directs, adapting Isaac Bashevis Singer's novel. A hundred and nineteen minutes, with Ron Silver as Herman, Anjelica Huston as Tamara and Lena Olin as Masha.
