Erbsen auf halb 6

The young stage director Jakob drives through a crash barrier and off a bridge. He survives, but his optic nerve is severed and he will not see again. He throws his rage at the only person willing to help him, a rehabilitation teacher named Lily, who has been blind since birth and whose work is teaching people how to live in the dark. The film's original title comes from that work: a blind person is told where the food sits on the plate by the clock, and the peas are at half past five. Lars Büchel puts Jakob and Lily on the road together and gets through the whole thing without reaching for pity. Blindness here is neither a tragedy nor a lesson, just a version of daily life that has to be learned again from the beginning. Fritzi Haberlandt and Hilmir Snær Guðnason make two people who get used to each other without ever seeing each other completely believable.
