What Even Mice Belong in Heaven Is About
The 2021 Czech animation by Jan Bubeníček and Denisa Grimmová follows a mouse and a fox who die at the same moment in an accident. They meet in animal heaven, where the distinction between hunter and prey no longer holds, and the two enemies have to travel together. The film was made in stop motion with puppets, and the texture of the figures, the detail of fur and fabric, is extraordinary. Though aimed at children its subject is directly death and prejudice; the story neither softens that nor frightens. The design of heaven is inventive: a kind of bathing ritual in which animals are cleared of their fears. Some scenes may be sad for young children. Who it's for: families who like stop-motion animation and anyone wanting to talk with children about death. Who it's not for: anyone looking for a cheerful children's film, or avoiding the subject of death.
