Every Day

Michael Sucsy moves the vantage point in adapting David Levithan’s 2012 novel. The book is narrated by A, who wakes each morning in a different body; the film keeps its camera on Rhiannon, played by Angourie Rice. Levithan had already retold the same events from Rhiannon’s side in Another Day, a companion novel from 2015. A’s private record changes too: an email account for A’s thoughts in the novel, a locked Instagram account with a picture from every body in the film. The oddest day in the script has A wake up inside Rhiannon herself and live her day out without breaking A’s own rule. Shooting ran in and around Toronto from 6 July to 12 August 2017. The budget was 4.9 million dollars, promotion cost the studio about 10 million more, and the worldwide gross came to 10.4 million. For British release the distributor cut images of suicide techniques to obtain a 12A; the BBFC records that an uncut 18 was available. A good fit if you can take A played by a different actor in nearly every scene, meeting the same character again each day. Not for anyone who would rather not be caught out by the suicide references left in after that cut.
