What Every Night Is About
The film starts from the first version of Flaubert’s Sentimental Education. Its subjects are first love, the intoxication of desire and a political change that came to nothing. The work takes those themes from the Revolution of 1848 and carries them to the generation of May 68. The account follows the parallel lives of two friends who grew up together. Henri is the practical one, Jules the idealist. The two leave their rural town and pursue their education separately. Green’s first feature treats speech as something declaimed rather than acted. The work took the Louis Delluc prize for a first film that same year. Alexis Loret and Adrien Michaux appear in Eugène Green’s French film, completed in 2001.
