What The Bridge of Arts Is About
Paris, 1979. On one side is a young man stuck at university and drifting apart from his girlfriend. On the other is a young woman who sings baroque music and is being ground down by a harsh conductor. The two never meet. One day the man hears her voice on a recording, and that voice changes everything for him. Eugène Green's French film has its actors speak deliberately flat and ceremonial, with their eyes turned straight to the camera. The manner pulls the film away from realism and towards the baroque music itself. Natacha Régnier and Denis Podalydès are in the cast. Some find Green's cinema too cold, and others love it for exactly that reason.
