Vincent, who lives with his mother and has never known who his father is, tracks the man down through a letter he finds at home: a well-known Paris publisher, self-satisfied and calculating. The boy is out for revenge at first, and goes far enough to actually try it. Then his father's brother turns up, and he meets someone who shows that fatherhood has nothing to do with blood. Eugène Green tells the film in chapters headed with titles taken from scripture and leans his compositions on paintings by Caravaggio and Georges de La Tour. The actors look straight into the camera, the lines are delivered one word at a time, and nothing tries to look natural. That strange formality does not cool the film down; it is what makes it funny. Mathieu Amalric plays the publisher and Fabrizio Rongione the uncle.
