What The Portuguese Nun Is About
Julie de Hauranne, a French actress, comes to Lisbon to shoot scenes from an adaptation of the seventeenth century Letters of a Portuguese Nun. Her mother was Portuguese but she has never seen the city, so between takes she walks it and meets an orphan, a suicidal aristocrat, a man who believes he is King Sebastião, and a nun kneeling in the chapel where they are filming. Eugène Green stages speech slowly and almost ceremonially, shooting faces straight on, which tells an impatient viewer everything in the first minutes. Leonor Baldaque won the GDA Foundation's best actress award for the part in 2009.
