What Fall from Grace Is About
The documentary takes as its subject the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas and Fred Phelps, who founded it. Since the mid-nineties this congregation of about seventy five people has staged tens of thousands of demonstrations against gay people, and in recent years has turned funerals, military funerals above all, into sites for them; the language on their placards is not repeated here. The film talks with Phelps, with members of the congregation, with those who stand against them and with two people who left the group along with their families, and the heaviest part is what that last group has to say. K. Ryan Jones’s seventy three minute American documentary was the first feature length film on this congregation, and the director made it while he was a university student. It was completed in 2007.
