Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story

Tomi Ungerer drew, and he wrote children’s books. His work did not stop there. Protest posters and lavish books of erotica came from the same hand. The documentary looks at more than seventy years of that output. Animation made from his own drawings runs through the film. Ungerer grew up in France during the war. The country was under German occupation at the time. He went to America afterwards and became known very fast. The things that lifted him there were the things that brought him down. His outspokenness and his refusal of any limit drew real malice. When his work was banned he came close to being forgotten. The film tells the rise and the fall together. It goes into the years before America and the years after as well. Maurice Sendak is among the people speaking. Tomi Ungerer and Maurice Sendak speak in the ninety eight minute documentary, an American production Brad Bernstein finished in 2012.
