What Fateless Is About
Fourteen-year-old Gyorgy is sent from Budapest to a labour camp and from there to Auschwitz and Buchenwald. What is unusual is the manner of the telling: the boy does not explain what happened afterwards with a lesson attached, but describes the moment as he lived it, and says that even in the camp there were times he found good. That is what makes the return unsettling, because everyone expects him to describe hell. The novel is Imre Kertesz's, and after winning the Nobel Prize in Literature he wrote the screenplay himself. Ennio Morricone composed the score.
