What Felix and Meira Is About
Meira lives in the Hasidic community in Montreal; she is married and has a small daughter. The community's rules are strict: no music from outside, no drawing, no looking men in the face. Félix has just lost the father he was estranged from and does not know what to do with himself. The two meet in a bakery. Maxime Giroux's Canadian film was named best Canadian feature at the Toronto film festival. Hadas Yaron plays Meira. The telling does not condemn the community wholesale; it shows the husband's pain too and does not treat the cost of leaving lightly. The subject is not faith but whether a woman can choose her own life. The tone is quiet and slow.
