What The Great Darkened Days Is About
While a world war goes on, Philippe, a draft dodger from Quebec, finds himself in the American West, keeping himself alive by entering Charlie Chaplin impersonation contests. On the long journey he makes towards home he meets people under the sway of a destructive madness fed by the disorder of the times. The journey is both violent and striking, and it runs like a kind of trial opening onto the dark side of the American dream. The film does not separate the real from the dream; it does not even say plainly which war is going on. Martin Dubreuil, Romain Duris and Sarah Gadon appear in Maxime Giroux’s ninety five minute Canadian production, completed in 2019.
