What Fellini: I'm a Born Liar Is About
The documentary lets Federico Fellini describe how he works in his own words. He touches briefly on where he came from and then gets to the real subject: how a scene is built, what is expected of an actor, and where the line between the real and the invented disappears. He rejects improvisation and asks instead for availability. Damian Pettigrew's documentary uses the interviews together with footage from the sets and pieces of the films. People who worked with Fellini speak as well; some of them say they felt like puppets. Roberto Benigni and Terence Stamp are among those talking. The film does not glorify him: it shows his invention and his absolute command of the set at the same time.
