What Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion Is About
Nami is used as bait in a drug operation by the police officer she loves and walks into the trap. When she tries to stab him she goes to prison, and inside becomes the target of both the warders and the governor. She does not speak, does not ask for mercy, and simply waits. Shunya Ito made it for Toei from inside the women's prison genre but exceeds the genre formally: there are rotating sets, abrupt shifts of colour and passages staged like theatre. Meiko Kaji plays the part almost entirely with her eyes, and the song she sings at the end was later used in Tarantino's Kill Bill. The film builds revenge not as a plan but as patience. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies Japanese genre cinema and formal daring. Who it is not for: anyone who must avoid sexual violence and torture.
