What Lupin the Third: Farewell to Nostradamus Is About
A simple diamond heist pulls Lupin somewhere he did not expect: a cult built on the prophecies of Nostradamus. The cult takes both the diamond and Julia, the daughter of a wealthy American running for president. The real target is the lost book of prophecy kept in the vault at the top of the man's skyscraper. As Lupin, Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko are separated, Zenigata is on their trail as usual. Nobuo Tomizawa's film is one of the theatrical entries in the Lupin III series and keeps the familiar elements: chases across continents, disguises, and a plan revealed at the last moment. The skyscraper section and the aeroplane sequence are among the most ambitious animation in the series. The narrative moves quickly between comedy and action, while the cult theme sits somewhere close to the arguments running through Japan in the 1990s. Who it's for: Lupin III viewers and anyone who likes classic anime action and heist narratives. Who it's not for: A viewer new to the series will struggle with the character relationships. The use of Fujiko also runs in the familiar shapes of its period.
