Wuhan in the 1990s. Li Baoli hauls goods and sells in the street and says exactly what she thinks; her husband Ma Xuewu manages a state factory. They move into a new flat, and people say of its position that it is a place where arrows come from every direction, which is where the film's Chinese title comes from. Not long after the move the marriage falls apart and Baoli is left carrying everything alone. Wang Jing's 2012 film comes from Fang Fang's novel. It is about a woman who works for years to put her son through school and receives blame rather than gratitude for it. Yan Bingyan plays her without softening anything. This is the underside of China's success story: the question of who paid for it.
