What Fengming: A Chinese Memoir Is About
Wang Bing's documentary consists almost entirely of one woman talking in one room. He Fengming, now old, recounts what she lived through in China after 1949 from beginning to end: her youth, the political campaigns, being marked out along with her husband, the camps, the separations. The camera does not move, no archive footage is cut in, there is no music. The room darkens, the light changes, and she goes on talking. The film runs past three hours and that length is a decision: it refuses to summarise a testimony and turns listening itself into work. Wang Bing's method is at its barest here, transmitting without interpreting.
