What Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate Is About
The documentary tells the long production of Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate and the collapse that followed its release. The account argues that the film changed the movie industry in ways nobody expected and counts it among the most influential ever made; that assessment is the documentary’s own. How the shoot grew, how the budget ran over and how the days on set passed are given in detail. Actors who worked on the film and its cinematographer speak in their own words. The claim that the failure of a single production also brought down a large studio stands at the centre of the account. The documentary does not choose a clear place between defending Cimino and accusing him, and sets the testimony side by side. Michael Epstein’s seventy eight minute American documentary, with Kris Kristofferson, Jeff Bridges, Brad Dourif, Vilmos Zsigmond and Willem Dafoe among those speaking, was completed in 2004.
