Carlos Moore What Finding Fela Is About
Fela Anikulapo Kuti invented afrobeat and used it as a political platform against the Nigerian dictatorship. Alex Gibney’s documentary covers his life, his music and his political weight, and it does so by an unusual route: it folds the standard documentary material, archive footage and talking heads, into backstage footage from the Broadway musical made out of Fela’s life. The musical’s director and choreographer Bill T. Jones appears in those sections. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2014. The hybrid structure divided reviewers; some took it as a fresh way in, others wrote that the big budget musical overshadowed the archive.
