What Casino Jack and the United States of Money Is About
Jack Abramoff was one of the most powerful lobbyists in Washington. When the millions in consulting fees taken from Native American tribes, the payments made to members of Congress, the factories operated on a Pacific island and an attempt to buy a casino were joined up, a federal investigation followed. Abramoff pleaded guilty in 2006 and went to prison. Alex Gibney's documentary does not reduce the affair to one man's greed. Its real question is which door money uses to get into politics, and how much of that is already legal. The film puts members of Congress, former staffers and journalists on camera; the place of figures like Tom DeLay and Bob Ney in the sequence is set out from the documents. The telling does not declare Abramoff the sole culprit, it describes the system itself.
