No Stone Unturned

On 18 June 1994, six men were shot dead in The Heights, a bar in the Northern Irish village of Loughinisland, as they watched Ireland play Italy in the World Cup. The getaway car, the weapons and the clothing the gunmen wore were all recovered quickly, and yet nobody was ever charged. Alex Gibney’s documentary follows the families who have been asking for answers for more than twenty years and takes the investigation apart step by step. Where it arrives is not an unsolved case but a far more uncomfortable question about the relationship between the security forces and the men who carried out the attack. The film then became part of its own story: in 2018 two of the journalists behind it were arrested over the alleged theft of confidential documents, the search warrants were later ruled unlawful, and both were awarded damages.
