What First a Girl Is About
Elizabeth, who wants to be a singer, leaves the dressmaker’s where she runs errands and, at the suggestion of a stage performer she meets, starts appearing as a man who impersonates women. As a woman taken on stage for a man she quickly becomes famous, but to keep the act going she has to build her whole life on that lie. When a very determined young man falls in love with her, matters tangle further. The songs and the dance numbers carry the story between the misunderstandings. Jessie Matthews appears in Victor Saville’s ninety four minute British musical; the film is a remake of a German production of 1933 and was completed in 1935.
