What First Communion Is About

Alessandro Blasetti’s 1950 comedy fits inside a single Easter morning. Carloni, a prosperous shopkeeper, has a daughter making her first communion, the dressmaker has not finished the dress, and the rest of the film is one man crossing Rome after it. Even once he has the dress in hand the walk back to the church keeps producing new obstacles, and his own self-importance produces most of them. Cesare Zavattini and Suso Cecchi d’Amico wrote it with Blasetti, and Aldo Fabrizi plays the father. It was made in the middle of neorealism and uses the same streets for comedy rather than for grief. It won a prize at Venice and was added in 2008 to Italy’s list of a hundred films to be preserved.
