What 1860 Is About
In Sicily the peasant Carmeliddu sets out to find Garibaldi and bring help to an island in revolt against Bourbon rule. The road takes him north and then to Genoa, and along it he meets Italians of different classes and different opinions, each understanding unification in another way. In the end he returns to the island with Garibaldi’s volunteers, and the film closes with the battle of Calatafimi. Alessandro Blasetti’s seventy five minute Italian film shot its peasants with non-professional actors in real locations and was counted a forerunner of the neorealist generation that followed. It was completed in 1934.
