What Four Steps in the Clouds Is About
Paolo, a travelling salesman, agrees to help a young woman he meets on a train: she is pregnant and unmarried and needs a husband to produce in front of her family. He takes the role on for a few hours and goes with her to her village. Once everyone sits down at the table nothing goes to plan, and there is also a wife and children waiting for Paolo at home. Alessandro Blasetti made it in 1942, in the middle of the war, and it is counted among the films that announced Italian neorealism. It steps away from the glossy cinema of the period to put ordinary people, train carriages and country houses at the centre. Warm, measured and surprisingly modern as a comedy. Hollywood remade it years later.
