What First Contact: Lost Tribe of the Amazon Is About
Communities with no contact with the outside are still living in the Amazon forest. The documentary records the first contact one of them made in 2014 at the village of Simpatia on the bank of the Envira River, a group known as the Sapanawa or Txapanawa. The anthropologist José Carlos Meirelles appears in it. The heaviest part is this: one member of the group says they were fleeing massacres in which many of their relatives were killed, and the perpetrators are not known. Angus Macqueen directed and it runs forty-nine minutes. This should be said: first contact is a phrase that describes where the outsider stands; for the people on the other side it is not a discovery but the result of having had to run.
