What Five Years Is About

Murat Kurnaz is a young Turkish citizen born in Bremen. From December 2001 he was held first at the Kandahar base in Afghanistan and then at Guantánamo, for four years and eight months, without a charge ever being brought and without trial. By early 2002 both American and German intelligence had concluded that the accusations against him had no basis. He was released on 24 August 2006. Stefan Schaller's film looks less at the legal side than at the psychological one: at time spent somewhere nobody can tell you when or why you will get out. Kurnaz later wrote an account of it as a book.
