Flipside

Chris Wilcha's 2024 documentary is about the director's own unfinished projects. The New Jersey record store where he worked as a young man is about to close. While trying to make a documentary about the shop, Wilcha opens other archives too. Footage he began and never finished across the years enters the film; the narrative frames this as an admission of failure and takes himself as subject. Ira Glass and other collaborators appear. The tone is funny and sad. The production is personal in scale. Who it's for: those who like personal documentary and stories about creative work. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a documentary with a clear subject; this one moves from one to the next.
